The Character Bus: Magical for You, Mildly Terrifying for Me

You’re casually walking around a Disney hotel and- BAM- you bump into a Disney character.

For most people, that sentence ends with: “best thing ever.”

For me?
Absolutely not.

Confession: I am 53 years old and I am terrified of Disney characters.
Yes. All of them.
But especially the princesses. (They make eye contact. I cannot handle it.)

I am so obviously afraid that Cast Member friends have noticed.
Like… it’s a thing.

My anxiety has improved slightly over the years. I can now maybe, sometimes, take a picture with one… if I prepare emotionally and possibly dissociate a little.

But my usual strategy?
I send my kids and husband in as a distraction… and then quietly walk away. Quickly. Possibly in a light jog.

So why- WHY- when I am minding my own business…
do I suddenly run into a very enthusiastic, slightly aggressive duck?

Because of the Character Bus.

Now you know what to look for… consider yourself emotionally prepared.

If you’re staying at a Disney hotel and the Character Bus pulls in, you are either:

  • extremely lucky

  • or extremely unlucky

There is no in-between.

The Character Bus brings 3–4 characters to your hotel, and they just… casually hop out and start wandering.

No lines.
No schedule.
No emotional warning.

They roam the lobby, the hallways, the high-traffic areas…
and sometimes- because they enjoy chaos- they appear in the quiet corners where you least expect them.

Just… waiting.

The characters are thrilled to be there.
Probably because of the air conditioning.
But also because people love them.

Children lose their minds (in a good way).
Adults take pictures.
And I… evaluate all available exits.

They do have a Cast Member with them to keep things from turning into total mayhem, and the bus usually stays about 30 minutes—just enough time for everyone to have a magical moment.

Or, in my case, a cardio workout.

I have had the pleasure—or depending on the moment, the absolute displeasure—of encountering characters in just about every Disney hotel.

Since my main strategy is to avoid eye contact and escape unnoticed, I don’t exactly have a lot of photographic evidence.

But… on a few brave occasions, I pulled up my big girl underwear, faced my fears, and took the picture.

So… here is the rare photographic evidence that I survived.

Please note:

  • My smile may look forced

  • My body may be slightly angled toward the nearest exit

  • And in at least one of these, I am mentally planning my escape

But I did it.
I stayed.
I took the picture.

Growth.

Look how brave I was with Donald Duck!
Notice how my husband is standing like a completely normal human… while I am clutching my shirt for dear life.
This all happened at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge after our lovely, calm lunch at Sanaa.
So… clearly, things escalated.

The best duck around—Donald Duck showing off his moves… while I quietly consider my exit strategy.

Goofy, being an absolute gentleman.
Me? Emotionally unavailable and completely frozen.
He deserved better.

We met Goofy in the lobby of Disney's Yacht Club Resort.
He was ready to take pictures. I clearly was not.

So naturally, I made G be the sacrificial lamb and go in first.

In fairness, I did buy her candy afterward… so I feel like it was a very fair trade.

There is no escaping them.

Dave and I were quietly admiring the Christmas decorations in the lobby of Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge.
It was peaceful. Empty. Calm.

And then… they appeared.

Chip.
And of course, Dale.

No warning. No time to emotionally prepare.

I reluctantly took a picture with Chip…
but please notice how tightly I am gripping my coffee cup.

That is not casual.
That is support.

So now you know.

The Character Bus is magical, unexpected, and a really fun way to meet characters…
unless you are me.

If you see it pull up to your hotel, get excited. Go meet them. Take the pictures. Make the memories.

I will be nearby…
casually walking in the opposite direction,
avoiding eye contact,
and pretending I urgently need a snack.
