Oh Ale & Compass Restaurant… How I Love You and Hate You

Some restaurants are just restaurants.

And then some restaurants become complicated relationships.

Ale & Compass is one of those.

Located inside Disney's Yacht Club Resort, this nautical little spot has managed to make me feel deep affection, disappointment, confusion, loyalty, and occasional rage… all before 10 a.m.

If you enter through the Yacht Club main doors, it’s on your left—but the entrance is tucked around the side like it’s hiding from accountability.

Let me explain.

First: Lunch and Dinner Are Innocent Here

Lunch is perfectly fine. Quiet, cool, uncrowded, and blessed with air conditioning.

The fish and chips are genuinely very good and large enough to share, which is rare in Disney math.

Dinner? Shockingly excellent.

The whole family ordered four different entrées and four different people left happy. That almost never happens.

My seafood pot pie was one of my favorite dishes I’ve ever eaten in Walt Disney World Resort. Rich, flavorful, loaded with seafood, and worth every painful dollar.

But I am not here today to discuss dinner.

I am here to vent about breakfast.

Once Upon a Time…

Breakfast at Ale & Compass used to be my favorite breakfast in all of Disney World.

Every Saturday, Dave and I would wake up early, eat a glorious meal, and then walk 13 miles.

(That sentence contains several mysteries for another day.)

The atmosphere was calm. Peaceful. Friendly. Dependable.

The food was so good I struggled to choose what to order.

Everything was peachy keen.

Then one day…

A new head chef arrived.

And everything changed.

The menu changed.
The waitstaff changed.
The energy changed.

And not in a whimsical makeover montage kind of way.

The new and “improved” menu

Let Us Discuss the Egg Situation

You know what appears on many breakfast menus?

Eggs.

You know how many ways you can order eggs here now?

One. Scrambled.

Not over easy.
Not poached.
Not hard.
Not sunny side up.

Just scrambled.

The waitstaff has literally told us that if guests “complain enough,” they may be allowed to request eggs another way.

That is not breakfast service.

That is a hostage negotiation.

Scrambled…

Then There Is the Bread Crisis

There is no toast.

No toaster.

If you want extra bread with your meal, you get a grilled English muffin.

That’s it.

Which raises many questions—mainly:

How are they making French toast in a toastless society?

The French Toast Never Changes

The seasonal French toast has been bananas foster for what feels like an entire fiscal year.

At some point, “seasonal” becomes fiction.

Even the Mood Changed

Some of the longtime beloved cast members have left.

The ones who remain have asked regulars to fill out surveys and complain.

That should tell you everything.

And Yet… We Still Go

Because relationships are complicated.

I still order the dark chocolate waffles with extra crispy bacon and maple syrup.

My beloved dark chocolate waffles

Yes, I contain multitudes.

Dave gets an upset stomach nearly every time, so I know to bring medication.

American breakfast and protein bowl

This is now part of our routine.

What Is the Continental Enhancement?

Honestly? A fascinating concept.

For $28, you get:

  • One entrée

  • One non-alcoholic drink

  • Buffet access

The buffet usually has yogurt, granola, pastries, biscuits, and fruit.

Still solid.

Still tasty.

Still more stable than the egg policy.

Is It Worth It?

If you order:

  • $23 protein bowl

  • $5 coffee

Then yes, it pays for itself.

If you order:

  • $16 dark chocolate waffles

  • $5 coffee

Now you must do math before waffles, and no one wants that.

Important Warnings from Someone Who Has Lived This

  • Don’t use the Disney Dining Plan here for breakfast. Better values exist elsewhere.

  • You cannot share the buffet. They are strict.

  • You cannot swap coffee for soda later without charge.

  • Refills are included, but flexibility is not.

Final Thoughts

Ale & Compass breakfast is like an old friend who changed dramatically and now says confusing things.

I still care.

I still visit.

I still hope.

But I also bring antacids, lowered expectations, and emotional resilience.
