The Polynesian: The Great Disney Bathroom Challenge
The Polynesian may be famous for Dole Whips, Tonga Toast, and tropical vibes...
But today we're talking about something even more important.
Bathrooms.
There are four public bathrooms spread throughout the resort, and naturally, I visited every single one.
4. Bathroom #54: Polynesian Downstairs
Hmm...
This bathroom and I have a complicated relationship.
Usually, I can walk into a Disney bathroom and know within five seconds whether I love it or hate it.
It's my superpower.
Well...
Maybe not a superpower.
More like a very specific talent that absolutely nobody asked for.
The bathrooms I dislike usually make it obvious.
They smell.
They're ugly.
They have no personality.
They make bizarre design choices.
This one?
I honestly don't know why I dislike it so much.
I just do.
And that's strange because there isn't anything technically wrong with it.
It's clean.
It's maintained.
It does exactly what a bathroom is supposed to do.
So why do I always leave feeling disappointed?
After thinking about it...
I don't think it's the bathroom.
I think it's my anxiety.
I've spent a lot of time in and around this restroom while G was having a Crohn's flare.
When someone you love is stuck in a bathroom, you wait.
And you wait.
And you wait some more.
Unfortunately, this is one of the worst places at the Polynesian to be waiting.
The restroom is next to Capt. Cook's and one of the main doors leading outside.
Translation?
There are people everywhere.
Families heading to the pool.
Guests grabbing a quick meal.
People rolling suitcases.
Strollers weaving through the hallway like they're competing in the Indy 500.
There are benches outside, which sounds lovely.
Until you realize they're right in the middle of all that foot traffic.
I've had my legs bumped by strollers more times than I can count.
Standing near the restroom entrance isn't much better.
The doors, the water fountain, and the constant stream of people create a little traffic jam.
No matter where you stand, you feel like you're blocking someone.
So I tried waiting inside the restroom instead.
That wasn't any better.
There's a giant column planted right in the middle of the room.
Wherever you move...
You're in someone's way.
For someone with anxiety...
It's exhausting.
The restroom itself is perfectly fine.
It uses the same soft green and beige color palette as the upstairs bathroom.
But somehow it doesn't have the same charm.
Maybe because the room is larger.
Maybe because the beige feels heavier.
Whatever the reason, it feels less warm and more...blah.
I do like the accent tile walls.
Especially around the baby changing area.
Those little touches keep it from feeling completely ordinary.
One thing to know...
There isn't a companion restroom downstairs.
If you need one, you'll have to go upstairs.
Which makes me chuckle.
The smaller upstairs restroom has one.
The larger downstairs restroom doesn't.
Disney logic is fascinating sometimes.
This bathroom earns a C- from me.
Not because it's dirty.
Not because it's broken.
Not because Disney did anything terribly wrong.
It simply never feels comfortable.
It isn't whimsical.
It isn't memorable.
And it certainly doesn't capture the magic of one of Disney World's most beautiful resorts.
For me...
It also carries memories I'd rather leave behind.
Sometimes a bathroom isn't judged by its tile or the number of stalls.
Sometimes it's judged by how it made you feel when you needed it most.
This one has never felt like a place to catch my breath.
It has always felt like a place to wait.
3. Bathroom #55: Polynesian Upstairs
For some reason...
This is my bathroom at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort.
I can't explain it.
Every single visit, I somehow end up here.
It has become a tradition.
A very strange tradition.
I have willingly climbed the stairs just to use this bathroom.
I have also tumbled down those same stairs after leaving it...
...and broke my toe.
So you could say this bathroom and I have some history.
The restroom is upstairs, right outside 'Ohana and Kona Cafe, so it sees a steady stream of hungry Disney guests.
Breakfast.
Dinner.
People dreaming about Tonga Toast.
People recovering from too much bread pudding.
It isn't a very large restroom, so don't be surprised if there's a short wait during busy meal times.
The good news is that it handles the crowds well.
It was clean during my visit, smelled fresh, and felt well cared for.
The design is one of my favorite parts.
The soft greens, warm beige walls, and beautiful floor tile feel perfectly Polynesian without being over-the-top.
Disney didn't plaster tiki masks on every wall and call it a day.
Instead, the theming is subtle.
Relaxing.
Elegant.
And that floor...
Whoever picked those tiles deserves a compliment.
One tiny detail I always appreciate...
There are two tissue boxes.
I know.
Most people would never notice.
But I review Disney bathrooms.
These are the things that bring me joy.
Between the men's and women's restrooms is a companion restroom, which is always wonderful to see.
The baby changing station, however, is a little odd.
Instead of being out in the open, it's tucked into its own little cubby that feels almost like a tiny bathroom stall.
It's a pretty snug space.
I can't imagine trying to change a wiggly toddler in there while juggling a diaper bag.
I did run into one problem.
Some of the stall doors have apparently decided that locking is optional.
That is not the kind of excitement anyone is looking for during a bathroom break.
Overall, this is a solid B-rated bathroom.
It isn't flashy.
It isn't one you'll go out of your way to visit.
But it's clean, comfortable, and quietly does its job.
Sometimes that's exactly what you want.
And before you head back downstairs...
Take a moment to say hello to the smiling tiki sculpture nearby.
After everything this bathroom and I have been through together, it feels like the polite thing to do.
2. Bathroom #56: Polynesian Villas Pool Bathroom
This bathroom completely caught me off guard.
Not because it was amazing.
Well...
It was amazing.
But because I had absolutely no idea it existed.
I thought I knew every bathroom at the Polynesian.
Apparently, the bathroom gods decided to humble me.
Finding it feels a little like discovering a hidden Mickey.
It's tucked along the walking path between Disney's Polynesian Village Resort and the Island Tower.
If you're walking toward the DVC building, the pool will be on your right.
The bathroom is on your left...
Hiding behind the soda refill station like it's playing the world's least exciting game of hide-and-seek.
I almost walked right past it.
That would have been a tragedy.
Because this little bathroom is wonderful.
From the moment I walked in, I could tell this was one of Disney's newer restrooms.
Everything felt intentional.
The colors blended together beautifully.
The tile was gorgeous.
The lighting was warm.
It all flowed together so naturally that nothing screamed for attention.
Instead, it quietly whispered...
"Relax."
And I did.
The Polynesian music softly playing in the background certainly helped.
For a few minutes, I completely forgot I was standing in a bathroom.
The sink area deserves its own round of applause.
Each sink has its own faucet, soap dispenser, and hand dryer.
No reaching across three people.
No dripping water across the counter.
Everything is exactly where it should be.
Can we please put whoever designed these sinks in charge of every Disney bathroom?
The baby changing area even has a beautiful light fixture.
Again...
Someone actually cared about the details.
Even the shower impressed me.
It was so spotless that I actually thought...
"I would shower here."
If you've been following the Great Disney Bathroom Quest, you know that is one of the highest compliments I can give.
The only odd thing I noticed was a stack of towels sitting on the changing table.
My guess is they simply don't have enough storage space nearby.
It looked more like a storage problem than a housekeeping problem.
Everything else was absolutely spotless.
The restroom smelled fresh.
The air conditioning was wonderful.
And during my visit...
I had the whole place to myself.
It was peaceful.
Cool.
Quiet.
Honestly, I could have stayed there for a while just listening to the music and pretending the Florida humidity didn't exist.
One funny thing...
The entrance looks like it should require a room key.
I fully expected the door to reject me.
Instead...
It opened right up.
Apparently everyone is invited.
This is one of Disney's newest bathrooms, and it shows.
Everything from the overhead restroom sign to the flooring feels thoughtfully designed.
Nothing feels like an afterthought.
Nothing feels out of place.
It's seamless.
It's relaxing.
It's exactly what a Polynesian bathroom should be.
This earns an A from me.
Disney didn't just build a bathroom.
They created a little oasis where you can cool off, slow down, and enjoy a few peaceful minutes before heading back into the Florida sunshine.
Now if you'll excuse me...
I'm still wondering how I managed to miss this bathroom.
1. Bathroom #57: Polynesian Villas Inside
This is it.
🏆 We have a winner.
After visiting every bathroom at the Polynesian...
This one takes the crown.
Not by a little.
By a mile.
This isn't just the best bathroom at the Polynesian.
It's one of the most beautiful bathrooms Disney has ever built.
I walked in...
Stopped.
Looked around.
Then immediately started taking pictures like I had just stumbled into an art museum.
Because honestly...
This bathroom is a work of art.
The flooring alone deserves its own fan club.
The black, gray, and white tile is absolutely gorgeous.
Then Disney carried the black tile up onto the walls, and suddenly the whole room feels elegant instead of "just another resort bathroom."
I would happily install these tiles in my own house.
Every single design choice feels intentional.
Nothing feels random.
Nothing feels like someone picked it out of a catalog five minutes before construction started.
The sinks are beautiful.
The lighting is beautiful.
The finishes are beautiful.
Everything works together.
Then Disney did something I never thought I would say...
They used wicker.
And I loved it.
Wicker!
Who am I?
Normally wicker and I are not friends.
But here?
It softens the modern design and quietly reminds you that you're still at the Polynesian.
It shouldn't work.
Yet somehow...
It absolutely does.
At the end of the hallway is a gorgeous piece of ocean artwork that ties the entire space back to the lobby.
It's one of those little details Disney didn't have to include...
But they did.
And it makes the whole experience feel connected.
Then there's the waiting area.
Yes.
I'm about to compliment a table.
Because this table deserves compliments.
The beautiful wooden table in the center of the hallway is stunning.
Who knew furniture could have so much personality?
The companion restroom is equally impressive.
Disney didn't treat it like the forgotten extra room.
It received the same beautiful tile.
The same thoughtful design.
The same attention to detail.
It feels like it belongs.
As it should.
There was Polynesian music playing throughout the restroom.
It was a little louder than I expected.
Not enough to bother me...
Just enough to make me think someone was about to hand me a Dole Whip.
The restroom was spotless.
Completely empty during my visit.
The air conditioning was wonderful.
Everything felt fresh.
Everything felt polished.
Even the restroom signs deserve applause.
There are two of them.
They're different designs.
And each one blends perfectly into the wall where it's mounted.
Instead of making the signs stand out...
Disney made them belong.
That's the kind of detail that makes Imagineers smile.
And apparently makes bathroom bloggers ridiculously happy.
I would absolutely walk over from the original Polynesian just to use this restroom.
Without hesitation.
This earns a very enthusiastic A+.
Bravo, Disney.
You didn't just win the Polynesian Bathroom Challenge.
You reminded me that even a restroom can be beautiful when every detail is given the care it deserves.
