Epic Universe Bathrooms Are Works of Art

I have something to admit.

And it pains my Disney-loving heart a little to say this.

Epic Universe bathrooms are magnificent.

Not good.

Not surprisingly nice.

Magnificent.

I walked into some of these bathrooms and just stood there staring.

At the walls.

At the sinks.

At the signs.

At the tile.

At the BABY CHANGING AREA.

Who am I?

Well, actually, we all know exactly who I am.

I am the woman who notices bathroom floor drains.

Of course I was going to notice all of this.

But I was not prepared for the amount of detail Universal put into these bathrooms.

Universal Came to Play

As you know, I am a Disney woman through and through.

Disney is my happy place.

I have spent years wandering around Disney World looking at bathrooms, judging bathrooms, getting excited about bathrooms and occasionally getting lost after leaving bathrooms.

So what I am about to say hurts a tiny bit.

Epic Universe consistently does bathrooms better than Disney.

There.

I said it.

I need a minute.

Because when it came to signage, theming, cleanliness, layout, air conditioning, baby-changing areas and those tiny details that make me ridiculously happy...

Universal won.

And not by a little.

Some of these bathrooms absolutely blew my mind.

The bathrooms in Darkmoor, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk and SUPER NINTENDO WORLD deserve awards.

Tiny golden toilet trophies.

I would attend the ceremony.

The bathrooms in Celestial Park and outside the park are more traditional theme-park bathrooms. They're perfectly functional, but they aren't the ones that made me stop in the doorway and whisper:

Look at this bathroom.

Because yes.

I do that.

The Layout

One thing I noticed very quickly was that almost every Epic Universe bathroom follows the same basic layout.

And I LOVE IT.

You arrive at the restroom area and there are multiple themed signs directing you where to go.

Women one way.

Men the other way.

And there is always a companion restroom.

Universal calls these either a Family Room or a Convenience Room, depending on the location.

Can we talk about "Convenience Room" for a second?

I love that name.

It sounds so much nicer.

Anyway...

Once you enter the main bathroom, there is another brilliant little feature.

Immediately on the left, almost tucked behind the entrance, is the baby-changing area.

And this isn't just a changing table slapped onto a wall as an afterthought.

Nope.

There is an actual changing area with its own sink.

And, of course, it is themed to the land.

Because apparently even diaper changes get immersive storytelling at Epic Universe.

The placement is fabulous.

It feels almost hidden from the rest of the bathroom, giving parents and children a little more privacy without putting them in a completely separate space.

That is thoughtful bathroom design.

And you know I appreciate thoughtful bathroom design.

Then there are multiple sinks on both sides.

Themed sinks, naturally.

After the sinks, you pass through an archway or divider into...

STALL LAND.

So many stalls.

Beautiful, glorious capacity.

This basic layout repeats throughout Epic Universe, with one bathroom in the Isle of Berk being the exception I found.

Normally, repetition would make me bored.

Bathroom number seven...

Yep.

Sinks.

Divider.

Stalls.

Moving along.

But that never happened here.

Same Layout. Completely Different Bathrooms.

This is where Universal did something really clever.

The basic bones of the bathrooms may be the same, but the theming changes so dramatically that every bathroom feels completely different.

I never felt like I was walking into the same bathroom with different wallpaper.

Each one had its own personality.

Its own signs.

Its own sinks.

Its own walls.

Its own little details waiting for someone to notice them.

Hello.

I am someone.

🙋‍♀️

There were bathrooms where I wanted to study every inch of the walls.

Bathrooms where I couldn't believe the restroom signs.

Bathrooms where I walked out thinking...

Did Universal really need to go this hard on a bathroom?

Apparently the answer was yes.

And I am very grateful they did.

So I'm Changing the Rules

Normally, my bathroom reviews have a system.

Location.

Crowds.

Cold air.

Stalls.

Paper.

Flushers.

Noise.

Smell.

Handwashing.

Decor.

Companion restroom.

The Official Ruling.

I have a process.

I am a professional bathroom overthinker.

But for this Epic Universe series, I am changing things up.

Because if I reviewed every bathroom using my normal template, I would spend half of every post telling you about the same basic layout.

And that isn't what makes these bathrooms special.

The art is what makes them special.

The signs.

The tile.

The fixtures.

The walls.

The colors.

The strange little details.

The things Universal absolutely did not have to put inside a theme-park bathroom...

but did anyway.

So for this series, we're going to look at Epic Universe bathrooms a little differently.

We're going to focus on the art of the bathroom.

I want to show you the details.

The weird things.

The beautiful things.

The things you might walk right past when you're rushing in because you drank a giant Butterbeer and suddenly have more important problems.

Because these aren't just places to pee.

Some of them are little themed worlds hiding behind a restroom sign.

And yes...

I am going to make you look at them.

Welcome to the Epic Universe Bathroom Quest.

Things are about to get ridiculously pretty.

There's More Behind These Bathroom Doors! 🚽

Apparently, I can't visit a theme park without inspecting the bathrooms. And Universal has given me plenty to talk about. Incredible theming, interesting signs, surprisingly impressive sinks, and yes, even black toilets.
